NAPS offers all students the opportunity to grow intellectually while becoming more aware of the world around them through a core curriculum that includes the following:

  • Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Physical Education
  • Art
  • Music
  • French
  • Library
  • Computer Skills

LANGUAGE ARTS - NAPS’ Language Arts Program introduces students to language as an effective form of communication, an invaluable skill, and an art to be enjoyed. The philosophy inherent in the curriculum recognizes and nurtures the potential and learning style of each student. Language as a skill provides the students with important tools to listen attentively, to speak fluently, to read and comprehend, to compose, and to be clearly understood. The program stresses the importance of understanding what should be communicated, how it is communicated, and why it is communicated. The curriculum takes an integrated approach to language arts through instruction based on children’s literature, ensuring that children develop an appreciation for literature and the authors who stir their imaginations with settings in far-off places, characters from a variety of cultures, and events both long past and current.

MATHEMATICS - The impact of technology on society and a scan of the future trends clearly indicates that instruction must go beyond the content taught and actively engage learners in demonstrating how they can select, interpret, use, and share selected information. The mathematics program at NAPS incorporates both conceptual understanding and arithmetical computation in the curriculum, ensuring that students are strong problem solvers who can compute well and communicate their thought processes.

SCIENCE - Students learn to observe, infer, and experiment through hands-on activities and inquiry-based learning experiences. During their course of study at NAPS, students will describe objects and events, ask questions, construct explanations, test those explanations against current scientific knowledge, and communicate ideas to others. Students also identify their assumptions, use critical and logical thinking skills, and consider alternative explanations. In this way, students actively develop their understanding of science by combining scientific knowledge with reasoning and thinking skills.

SOCIAL STUDIES - The program covers key areas of history and geography, including essential mapping skills. Concepts addressed include time and change; connections and conflict; people, places, and the environment; cultural studies, and governance.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - Through the Physical Education Program, NAPS students perform activities that develop fine and gross muscle coordination. They learn the fundamentals of soccer, basketball, dance, and various organized sports. Classes at all grade level place particularly emphasis on good sportsmanship and effective teamwork. Art Students in each grade learn the basic art media, including watercolor, tempera, printmaking, paper constructions and collage, at different age-appropriate levels. Students also learn about crafts such as bookmaking, ceramics, and papier-maché. Whenever possible, art projects are thematic and relevant to subjects studied in the classroom. Lessons also incorporate art history.

MUSIC - NAPS’ Music programs helps students develop the ability to listen to and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgments about musical quality. It also encourages active involvement in different forms of music making, both individual and ensemble, which helps students develop a sense of group identity and togetherness while contributing to the development of self-discipline, creativity, aesthetic sensitivity, and fulfillment. Students learn technical skills and the core elements of performing, composing, listening, and appraising.

FRENCH- All elementary school students study French. Language training activities are geared to the child’s interest level and include experiences with cultural practices and integration of thematic content. French is integrated in all content areas. These experiences emphasize listening, speaking, reading and comprehension in meaningful, communicative contents: social/cultural situations, games, songs, and rhymes plus experiences with arts, crafts, movement and total physical response.

LIBRARY - The Library program at NAPS has two objectives. The first is to lay the foundation for effective library usage through the systematic teaching of library and information skills needed for lifelong learning. Encouraging learners to grow in their abilities to find, generate, evaluate and apply information that will help them function effectively as individuals and members of society. A second and equally important goal is to foster an appreciation and love for reading as a recreational pursuit.

COMPUTER SKILLS - Students learn programs in word processing, database management, spreadsheets, graphics, and presentations, and whenever possible these skills are integrated into other subject areas. Students also learn more technologically specific skills. Classroom lessons also direct attention to the social, ethical, and human issues surrounding the effects of technological development.
