NAPS NEWSLETTERS-AUGUST 2011
............................................................................................................

SCHOOL BEGINS TUESDAY, AUGUST 23!

The NAPS NEWS is a monthly publication designed to keep you informed!  Both new information and reminders will be disseminated through the newsletter, and we ask that you read each issue thoroughly.  Look for the NAPS NEWS the first Tuesday of every month in the Tuesday Envelope.  Each issue will also be posted on our website at www.napschool.com.

The Tuesday Envelope contains weekly communications from the administrative offices at NAPS.  It is typically disbursed on Tuesday through the eldest child in each family.  However, look for it on the Wednesday following any Monday holiday.  Use the envelope to communicate with administrative staff and convey tuition checks.  Please remember classroom teachers do not load or empty the envelopes, and typically communicate through the Blue Folders and/or Assignment Books.  PK2 and PK3 parents are asked to return the envelope the next scheduled school day.

If the envelope is not returned, you will miss important information in the following weeks.  A new envelope will not automatically be issued.  A new envelope will be issued, at an additional charge, ONLY if confidential information such as grade cards or account information must be passed OR if requested by the parent.  Please contact Chris Daley if you have any questions.

Farewell and Following Seas to Charlene Carr!  Mrs. Carr, our respected and admired second grade teacher for over 11 years, decided to retire this summer!  Mrs. Carr enriched our experience with her love for baseball and Native American culture.  She will be missed and we wish her well in her future endeavors.

Main Ingredient Hot Lunch sign-up information is included in this envelope! This new program offers a wide variety of options, is flexible from day to day, and offers an opportunity to support the school!  It is also the only hot lunch program offered this semester.  Please read the following to ensure success in ordering:

  1. All orders must be placed online by a parent.  Visit www.themainingredient.com.  Click on the lunch box button at the bottom of the page.  NAPS code is NavalAcademy20.
  2. Orders must be placed monthly and once completed, meals are locked in for a single month only.
  3. September lunches will begin on Thursday, September 1.  September orders must be submitted online by August 15.
  4. Missed lunches will NOT be made-up under any circumstances.
  5. Since options are not set on a regular schedule, please mark your calendar regarding the days your child will be receiving a hot lunch.  If your child is mistakenly sent to school without a lunch, the school will provide a Lunchable at a cost of $5.00.
  6. Carefully read the enclosed brochure, information sheet, and all online information for further details.

NAPS is closed Monday, August 22 in preparation for the first day of school for kindergarten through fifth graders, Tuesday, August 23.  All PK students begin on a staggered schedule.  See the enclosed flyer for details.

New Parent Orientation is scheduled for Monday, August 15 at 7 p.m. at the school.  New parents only are encouraged to attend.  The evening is designed to offer new parents the opportunity to meet the board and administrative staff members, plus review the school’s daily operations.  A question and answer period will be included.  This is AN ADULT ONLY EVENT and teaching staff will not be in attendance.

Student Information Forms distributed in the June mailing or at the time of enrollment must be returned immediately.   As part of our Emergency Preparedness Plan, all contact information must be on file prior to the beginning of school.  Please ensure that a local emergency contact is included, as we will be contacting and confirming all numbers.

Field Trip Permission and NAPS Handbook Agreement Forms are enclosed in this mailing.  Please return the signed forms on the first day of school.  The blanket permission form eliminates the need for signed forms at the time of each trip.  However, parents will be informed of field trips and uniform requirements well in advance of each trip.

Immunization Forms are due the first day of school.  All new students must provide an up-to-date immunization record.  Returning students must provide an updated immunization record if new shots were received in the past year.  Or, if no new shots were administered, returning students must submit the immunization form with NO CHANGE written across the top.

Account Statements are included in this packet for families with an account balance.  Please submit payment in full by August 20th.  If you have any questions or concerns, contact Finance Director Pam Dorsey at 410.757.3090 or email pdorsey@napschool.com.

Carpool Numbers are included in this mailing.  All families using the mid-day or afternoon carpool are issued a number.  Two cards are provided to each family.  Please affix the card in the upper right corner of the windshield or the back of the visor.  To expedite carpool operations, the number should be visible to the staff member manning the walking talkie from two car lengths way.  Any families forming a regular carpool group are asked to organize themselves and inform Chris Daley immediately.  This will alleviate multiple numbers for one group.

Back-to-School Night Schedule Change!  The event will be held Thursday, September 15, at 7 p.m.  After a brief meeting on the porch, parents are invited to visit classrooms until 9 p.m.  Teachers will be available to acquaint you with the classrooms and answer general questions.  Parents are asked to refrain from engaging in a personal conference.  Teachers are happy to schedule individual meetings at another time if necessary.  AN ADULT-ONLY EVENT

Extended Care offers two, three, and five day permanent options.  Students enrolled in two regular days a week are charged $88 a month for each block.  Students enrolled in three regular days a week are charged $132 a month for each block.  To be considered a permanent two or three day user, the days must remain the same week after week.

Occasional users will be charged a $25 enrollment fee at the beginning of each semester, and not at the time of first use.  Therefore, if you have indicated a desire to use extended care occasionally, the first $25 fee will appear on your September invoice.  Users will have the opportunity to re-enroll or dis-enroll in December, and if applicable, another $25 enrollment fee will be issued in January.

Our Boardwalk Beach Blast is scheduled for Saturday, September 17.  Our first family-oriented social event includes a buffet dinner, face painting, baking contest, and much more.  Look for more details in this mailing.

New Logo Magnets were distributed in the June Mailing.  All families have been provided a complementary magnet!  Additional magnets are available for $5.00 each and are available in the Admissions/Finance office.

Asbestos Inspections are a regular and ongoing component of our safety routine.  As required by law, the Naval Academy Primary School is inspected regularly to insure compliance with all rules and regulations in regard to Asbestos management.  The school was inspected on March 22, 2011 and passed with flying colors!

ON-GOING SCHOOL WIDE FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES!

Help keep tuition down by participating in these simple activities!

Combined Federal Campaign pledges reached over $4,800 this year!  We would like to thank the Ebert, Farley, Garvey, Kamoie, Leeds, Newcomer, O’Leary, Weeks, and Woods families for choosing the school as your Capital Campaign recipient.   Please spread the word and encourage your friends and family to consider NAPS when giving.  Our code is 60039.

Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup Labels for Education continue to be collected on behalf of the school. We earned $650 during the 2010/11 school year.  The collection box is located in the lobby, next to the sign in/out log or send in your labels through the Tuesday Envelope.  Please ensure that all labels are secure in a separate envelope.  Our thanks to Holly McKee for overseeing this effort!

Giant A+ Rewards equaled $2,114 last school year!  Members must reregister every year and new forms will be distributed through the Tuesday Envelope in the near future.

Scrip Gift Cards are available for hundreds of retailers across the country.  In our first year of participation NAPS earned $1,665.  Detailed information about how to support the school through this program will be sent home soon.

The Funding Factory recycles used ink toners and cell phones.   Your recycling efforts raised $968 for the school!  Our thanks to Bill Williams for administering this activity.

Flynn & O’Hara Uniforms gifted the school with a $1,243 rewards check!  Both your PE and everyday uniform purchases help keep costs down here at the school!  Thank you for participating!

NAPS Annual Fund continues to be a valued source of funds!  The school strives to be the area’s best value for tuition dollars, and has worked to prevent a tuition increase for the 2011-12 school year.  Therefore, the school relies heavily on the Annual Fund to finance many projects that would otherwise be out of reach.  Last year we outfitted the classrooms with Smart Boards!  We hope each NAPS family will strive to support this activity in some way.  Single donations or monthly donation schedules are available, and donations of any amount are appreciated.  Look for this year’s opportunity to participate in an upcoming Tuesday Envelope.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS!
