NAPS NEWSLETTERS- NOVEMBER 2011
............................................................................................................

NAPS will be closed several days this month.  Due to parent-teacher conferences, no school this Thursday, November 3 for PK2 students ONLY and Friday, November 4 for PK3-Fifth grade students.  No school Friday, November 11 in observance of Veterans’ Day.  No school November 23, 24, and 25 for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Fifth Grade Bake Sale is scheduled for conference day, Friday November 4!  Enjoy fresh baked goods that morning, and packaged goodies for the ride home.

Sherwood Forest Farms Greenery orders are due by noon, Wednesday, November 2!!  These beautiful evergreen decorations are guaranteed fresh and are certain to raise holiday spirits.  Estimated delivery is November 28-December 5.  Order forms available by request at development@napschool.com.

The Seventh Annual NAPS Run drew over 225 participants to Greenbury Point Road.  The weather was beautiful and the morning a success!   We thank Development Director Shannon Chatlos and Scott and Marty Broerman for coordinating a wonderful event and a host of great volunteers.  Thank you all!

The race was officially timed for the first time and results can be found at http://www.active.com or http://www.bluepointtiming.com.  We regret the initial confusion regarding finishers and appreciate the patience of all in attendance.

Scrip Gift Card sales are a popular addition to our fundraising ventures!  Remember that when you purchase a card, half of the donation percentage is applied to your NAPS invoice and half is donated directly to NAPS!  This is a win/win opportunity!  A variety of cards are now available in the NAPS office for immediate purchase!  Please consider the following when making your purchases:

  1. Check online at www.glscrip.com to review specials.  The specials change regularly and start and end dates should be confirmed before ordering.
  2. Orders are submitted to Scrip every Thursday before noon with an anticipated delivery date of the following Tuesday.  When possible, orders will be included in the Tuesday Envelope.  When not possible, orders will be sent home on the school day following delivery.  Please check the Blue Folder if you anticipate an order.
  3. The last order of the semester is Thursday, December 8 to be delivered on Tuesday, December 13. Ordering will commence again upon our return in January.
  4. An assortment of Scrip cards will be available for immediate purchase at our Breakfast with Santa event.  Please consider this option when looking for stocking stuffers!

A Thanksgiving Feast, hosted by the school, for first and second graders is scheduled for Monday, November 21 and for third through fifth graders on Tuesday, November 22.  A traditional meal is provided and students are not required to bring lunch on their scheduled day.  If the menu does not appeal to your student, please feel free to pack a supplemental snack.  PK and Kindergarten students should watch for a communication from your child’s teacher regarding Thanksgiving celebrations.

A Uniform Committee has been established to review the current uniforms and suppliers.  Thoughtful and considerate suggestions are welcome.  Send your written input to Devon Clouse by close of business, Thursday, November 10.

Veterans’ Day Dress Down Day is scheduled for Thursday, November 10.  In support of our own active duty military parents and the Wounded Warrior Program, students may wear appropriate civilian clothing in exchange for a $2 (or more) donation.

School Photo Retakes are scheduled for Tuesday, November 8.  If your child missed the original picture day or you desire a retake, call Chris Daley to schedule a sitting at 410-757-3090.

Winter Weather is suddenly upon us!  We request that children be sent to school in appropriate attire with labeled coats, hats, and gloves as our students go outside for recess unless it is precipitating.  The wind chill factor is an issue and it is often several degrees colder near the water.  Within the building, students may wear either a NAPS sweatshirt or the navy blue sweater options described in the NAPS Handbook, pages 17 – 19.

Block Extended Care Users are asked to carefully consider needs before committing to a schedule.  Extended care is staffed based upon anticipated participants and requires careful administration.  Parents are reminded that students must stay the same days every week.  A $25 administrative fee will be assessed to your account each time a change is made to your block care schedule.

The Tuesday Envelope is the most effective means of distributing information throughout the school.  We ask parents to fully empty the envelope before returning it.  This way, we know that you have received and seen the information.  It is also the responsibility of the parent to ensure that the envelope is returned to NAPS in a timely manner.  Please return the envelope the next school day.  In general, kindergarten through fifth grade parents should return the envelope on Wednesday, PK3 parents should return the envelope on Friday, and PK2 parents should return the envelope on Thursday. If your envelope is lost, please notify the administrative office and another will be issued for a minimal fee.

The Fifth Graders sang beautifully at the French Monument Ceremony.  They did a super job performing the French national anthem and representing NAPS.  Madame Lounsberry appreciates the efforts made to participate in this yearly event.

Breakfast with Santa – Save the Date of Saturday, December 3, 2011!  Our traditional holiday breakfast will feature a breakfast buffet, a visit from Santa, Santa photo opportunities, and goodie bags.  Space is limited and reservations are required.  Look for a registration form in an upcoming Tuesday Envelope.

The Christmas Pageant is scheduled for Thursday, December 15, in Mahan Hall on the Naval Academy Yard.  Kindergarten through fifth grade students, dressed in formal uniform, must arrive between 6:30 and 6:45 p.m., as the performance begins promptly at 7:00 p.m.  While PK students do not participate, all NAPS families are invited to attend.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth 2011-2012 Talent Search is underway.  Contact Devon Clouse regarding information about testing and participation in the program.
